What strategic role should Azure AD play in your org?

Managing and governing access to IT resources has become a central enterprise priority as digital transformation expands the number and types of identities needing access to more services, while cyber threats and global data protection regulations intensify. Access management and governance now extend far beyond employees to include partners (B2P), customers/consumers (B2C), and non-human identities such as software services and IoT devices. To address this complexity quickly, many organizations are turning to Identity as a Service (IDaaS), with Microsoft Azure Active Directory (AAD) often shortlisted because it is widely deployed via Office 365 and benefits from Microsoft’s scale and ecosystem.

AAD offers multiple editions and related capabilities (e.g., B2C, B2B collaboration, Domain Services), enabling organizations to select features that match common needs such as integrating on-premises Active Directory with cloud services, enabling SSO, and supporting partner/customer access. Supporting components include Azure AD Connect for synchronizing identities across on-premises and cloud directories, and Azure AD App Proxy for hybrid application access without VPN. Security enhancements include Identity Protection, which uses machine learning to score user and session risk and trigger remediation, and Conditional Access, which supports multiple MFA factors and uses large-scale access data to shape risk-based controls.

Despite strong access management capabilities, AAD has historically been weaker in access governance: centralized ways to set, review, and prove access controls were often missing or fragmented. Microsoft introduced Azure AD Identity Governance in 2019 within Premium P2 to address lifecycle governance and privileged access, but access governance remains limited for other editions. As a result, AAD is best suited to Microsoft-standardized environments with standard SaaS integrations or smaller organizations that can compensate manually for governance gaps, while heterogeneous enterprises with strong governance requirements may need more specialized solutions.
