This divergence often creates a gap in understanding, leading some OT teams to see IT security goals as conflicting. Industrial organizations typically separate operational systems (industrial process control) from administrative systems (email, accounting, document management), sometimes even running entirely separate networks to reduce the chance that failures or malicious activity in administrative environments affect operations. OT includes the hardware, sensors, and software used to monitor and manage physical equipment, commonly supervised via Industrial Control Systems (ICS). ICS are high-availability systems and generally fall into continuous process control (often using programmable logic controllers, PLCs) or discrete process control. SCADA is presented as a subset of ICS, providing operator interfaces, alarms, and local/remote adjustments, and is traditionally used for large, distributed systems like power grids and pipelines.
The rise of Industrial IoT (IIoT) introduces cloud services, predictive analytics, and machine learning, extending industrial data access beyond the factory. While this expands the attack surface, risks can be mitigated through security measures and risk-based prioritization of threats by likelihood and impact. Key security opportunities include network partitioning and segmentation (including unidirectional gateways or air gaps where warranted), stronger account management with least privilege, proactive vulnerability management via threat modeling, endpoint protections (whitelisting, disabling portable media, secure communications), and next-generation ICS/SCADA security tools using machine-learning-based anomaly detection for actionable mitigation.
