Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a Seattle-headquartered cloud provider created to standardize the infrastructure behind Amazon’s retail business and launched publicly in 2006 to offer on-demand infrastructure via subscription. It has since grown into the largest cloud provider by footprint and revenue, operating 61 availability zones across 20 regions and serving millions of active customers monthly. AWS focuses on “builders” by providing more than 165 services spanning core infrastructure, cloud-native development, and advanced capabilities such as machine learning and satellite management.
As organizations move to cloud-native models for scalability, reduced management overhead, and lower total cost of ownership, they can underestimate new security and compliance risks. AWS addresses infrastructure security under its shared responsibility model—covering layers from physical facilities up through the host operating system and virtualization—while customers remain responsible for securing their applications, data, and configurations. High-profile breaches have often been driven by customer misconfigurations of cloud data stores, applications, and APIs, and regulations such as GDPR have raised the stakes of security failures.
Amazon GuardDuty, launched in 2017, is a fully managed threat detection service designed to provide enterprise-grade visibility across multiple AWS accounts with minimal setup and operational overhead. It monitors a constrained set of AWS-native data sources—CloudTrail, VPC Flow Logs, and DNS logs—accessing them without requiring customers to enable or store logs themselves. GuardDuty correlates events using AWS-managed rules, threat intelligence feeds, and machine learning to produce contextualized “findings” with severity levels, retained for 90 days. While it lacks broad SIEM-like workflows and out-of-the-box remediation, it can trigger custom automated actions via CloudWatch Events and AWS Lambda, making it a low-friction baseline security capability AWS customers are strongly encouraged to enable.
